Since the 2017 UKGC bonus and social-responsibility reform — a consultation our founder contributed evidence to — every bookmaker and casino licensed by the UK Gambling Commission is required to offer the four tools below. You do not have to ask permission to use them, and using them does not affect your odds or your bonus eligibility in a way that changes the published terms. Using them is a normal part of playing, not a sign of a problem.
Deposit limits
Set a daily, weekly or monthly cap on the amount you can deposit. Most operators let you lower a limit instantly; raising one usually takes 24 hours and a confirmation step. A £200-a-week cap is the median limit set by UK players who later sought help, according to GamCare's 2023 treatment data — but the right figure is the one you can genuinely afford to lose.

Reality checks
Pop-up reminders while you play, showing how long you have been logged in and your net position (stakes minus winnings). They default to every 30 or 60 minutes at UKGC sites, and you can shorten the interval to 15 minutes. Reality checks are not designed to be ignored — read them.

Time-outs
A short break from a single operator: 24 hours, 48 hours, 7 days, or up to 6 weeks. Your account is locked for that period and cannot be reopened by customer service. Different from self-exclusion because it is short and operator-specific. Useful after a bad run.

Self-exclusion (GAMSTOP)
Block yourself from every UKGC-licensed online operator at once, for 6 months, 1 year, or 5 years. Once the period starts, it cannot be reversed early. GAMSTOP is run by an independent body — not by the operators themselves — and it is the single most effective step you can take if you feel your gambling has slipped.
Where to register: gamstop.co.uk (one form covers every UK site).
