Methodology
How we score every operator — in plain English.
The 12-point rubric has been the spine of this site since launch in March 2018. It exists so that the operator with the deepest affiliate wallet never out-ranks the one giving the player a better deal. Below is what each score is actually built from — and what we do when an operator falls short.
The 12-point scoring rubric
- Bonus headline clarity — the advertised figure vs. what you actually receive after T&Cs.
- Wagering multiplier — bonus funds, deposit funds, free spins tracked separately.
- Minimum odds on qualifying bets — including each-way and system bets.
- Expiry windows — how long you have to use the bonus or free bet.
- Game weighting — which games contribute 100% to wagering and which are capped.
- Maximum win / withdrawal cap — the fine print nobody flags at signup.
- Payment-method exclusions — e-wallets and PayPal often excluded from welcome offers.
- Verification friction — time and document demands before withdrawal is paid.
- Withdrawal speed, real money — measured over 30 days, not advertised.
- Customer support response — live chat, email and phone, tested in UK office hours.
- Safer-gambling tools — deposit limits, time-outs, GAMSTOP integration.
- Licence & complaint history — UKGC action log, IBAS rulings, ASA adjudications.
Why the lowest-paying affiliate deal never pushes a bookmaker up our table.
Our commercial team negotiates separately from our editorial team. A higher commission does not change a score. A lower commission does not change a score. Scores move when wagering T&Cs change, when withdrawal speed drifts, or when an operator is sanctioned — and the audit log of every change since 2018 is available on request to researchers, journalists and Trading Standards.
The zero-tolerance delisting policy.
Since 2019 we have removed 38 operators from the index — for slow withdrawals, misleading T&Cs, or licence breaches. Three of those operators subsequently lost their UKGC licence entirely. We publish the delisting log in the editorial archive.
The methodology exists because our founder Luke Mayfield (ex-Gala Coral bonus analyst, 2008–2015) published a Channel 4 News investigation into hidden wagering rules in 2016 — work that fed directly into the UKGC’s 2017 bonus reform consultation.

What happens when an operator falls short?+
If an operator breaches our wagering-transparency check, drifts on withdrawal speed, or is sanctioned by the UKGC, we drop the score immediately and flag the card on the index. If the issue is not resolved within 30 days, the operator is delisted. 38 operators have been delisted since 2019 — three subsequently lost their UKGC licence entirely.
